Man City, Chelsea and the $4.8 billion Monday monster

Man City, Chelsea and the $4.8 billion Monday monster

When does a rich man’s plaything become a rich man’s chore? Possibly when a richer, more ambitious rival comes along and learns quickly how to beat you at your own game.
When Premier League leaders Manchester City face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday, Roman Abramovich will get a first-hand view of the Frankenstein’s monster he has inadvertently helped to create at the Etihad Stadium.
Chelsea owner Abramovich has outspent City’s Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan by approximately pounds 1 billion since arriving in west London in June 2003, but the Russian oligarch has taken eight years to creep towards the pounds 2 billion mark.
At his current rate of spending, Sheikh Mansour will break that barrier two years quicker.
It has taken a combined investment of almost pounds 3 billion from both men to transform Monday’s fixture into a battle of wealth, ego and power, as well as a mere contest for three Premier League points.
But while the product on the pitch this evening would suggest that City have aggressively taken Chelsea’s blueprint to another level and left Abramovich with the expensive quandary of whether to stick or twist in an effort to reclaim past glories, the picture beneath the surface paints a different image, one of Chelsea’s roots beginning to bear fruit in a manner that City can only aspire to.
Within Stamford Bridge, and also among the hierarchy at Old Trafford, the Nou Camp and Allianz Arena, there is a sense that City’s historical and geographical limitations will eventually restrict their so-far unchecked growth.
City have made the Chelsea template work on the pitch - well-recruited young, athletic players under an all-powerful manager - but closing the gap on the London club commercially, a key issue once Uefa’s Financial Fair Play regulations come into force in 2015, will be an altogether more difficult challenge.
The most recent accounts posted by both clubs help illustrate the challenge facing City off the pitch.
While a loss of pounds 194.9?million, fuelled by an annual wage bill of pounds 174?million, obscures City’s success in hiking turnover to pounds 153?million, Chelsea’s figures are much healthier. Their pounds 172.5?million wage bill is a cigarette paper away from City’s, but turnover of pounds 205.8?million and loss of pounds 68.6?million emphasises the distance City must travel to surpass Chelsea.
Globally, Chelsea have become the closest challenger commercially to the well-established triumvirate of Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid. The club are ranked fourth, with 250 million global fans, as the world’s most recognised and supported, while Chelsea are a top-three brand within the Adidas football stable.
When City played Club America in San Francisco in July, it was in front of a crowd of 11,000. Two years earlier, more than 81,000 witnessed Chelsea’s clash with Inter Milan in Pasadena.
Garry Cook’s presence at City prior to his resignation as chief executive in September was viewed within the game as a positive factor in the club’s attempts to ‘crack’ America due to his links with Nike, so Abu Dhabi’s choice as his successor is being eagerly awaited by rival clubs keen to assess City’s targets for commercial expansion.
But those targets depend on exploiting the City brand and it is one which has yet to establish the global footprint of Chelsea.
Even within Stamford Bridge, there is an acceptance that United, with their 50 years of history dating back to the Munich disaster, are a brand apart.
Real, Barcelona, Bayern and the Milan clubs are viewed with similar respect.
Chelsea’s unique selling point is their London base and the club actively leverage the London aspect when recruiting players and sponsors. Big brands, whether they are players or companies, are attracted by the pull of London — which is why United, City and Liverpool have offices in the capital to exploit the London market.
But while City have in the past compared their growth to that of Pepsi, which piggybacked the much more established Coca-Cola in the Eighties to establish its brand, exploiting United’s global appeal to secure the spotlight can be no more than a phase one strategy.
City’s challenge is to establish their own unique credentials in a crowded market. Once the ‘project’ of becoming the best has been achieved, what next?
In the United States, the LA Lakers and New York Knicks remain the most powerful and prosperous NBA brands, despite the recent successes of the San Antonio Spurs, which supports the theory that history, location and success will always outweigh success alone.
Progress is clearly being made at City, however. The pounds 400?million, 10-year ground and shirt sponsorship deal with Etihad Airways shows that club’s ability to match deals struck by their most established rivals.
The club are also keen to stress their involvement in the local community. The purchase of land in east Manchester close to the Etihad Stadium will regenerate a run-down area of the city and lead to the building of a new training campus should planning permission be granted on Dec 22.
City’s determination to grow as a ‘good neighbour’ even stretches to products such as ice cream and soft drinks in the stadium press room being sourced from local manufacturers and their determination to project themselves as Manchester’s team has been evident since the infamous “Welcome to Manchester” poster following the signing of Carlos Tevez in 2009.
Having finished ninth in the season prior to Sheikh Mansour’s arrival in September 2008, City have depended on an accelerated investment strategy to arrive in their current position. Chelsea’s rise under Abramovich was faster, but the Russian purchased a Champions League semi-finalist with a squad and structure already well-established.
Crucial to Chelsea’s success, however, was the appointment of Jose Mourinho following Claudio Ranieri’s failure to repay Abramovich’s investment with silverware.
Roberto Mancini now appears to be emulating Mourinho’s strategy of recruitment and winning tactics. Chelsea’s trajectory was checked by Mourinho’s departure, but the club have since won a Double, reached a Champions League final and secured consistent top-three finishes.
The belief is that, having built a winning structure, Chelsea can succeed, whether the manager is Guus Hiddink, Carlo Ancelotti or Andre Villas-Boas.
Can City thrive without Mancini, if they are faced with the loss of the Italian and his self-appointed backroom team as Chelsea survived the loss of Mourinho and his coaches?
City are a formidable challenge for Chelsea, however, and one which prompted the pounds 70?million deadline day purchase of Fernando Torres and David Luiz in January.
But while Abramovich may be forced to repeat that investment again to close the gap on City on the pitch, there is only one winner off it.

COLE AMONG EUROPE'S ELITE
Posted on: Wed 19 Jan 2011
Ashley Cole has been named in Uefa's Team of the Year for 2010.
The left-back was voted into the team by visitors to Uefa.com, which describes the defender as 'maybe the most consistent left-back of his generation'.
It caps a superb year for the 30-year-old, who was instrumental in our Barclays Premier League and FA Cup Double last season.
Cole is the only Chelsea representative in the side, though Branislav Ivanovic, Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba were also nominated. Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was voted in as coach.
The team in full is: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid); Maicon (Inter), Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol (Barcelona), Ashley Cole (Chelsea); Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Wesley Sneijder (Inter), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona); Lionel Messi and David Villa (Barcelona).

Cole will be taking part in the latest instalment of An Audience With alongside Daniel Sturridge. Click here to purchase your ticket now and ask our left-back a Chelsea question, alternatively you can call 0871 984 1955 or email specialevents@chelseafc.com.\Chelsea Football Club Ashley Cole and Daniel Sturridge are the latest players to take centre stage in our 'An Audience with...' events, where fans get the chance to ask their questions. http://bit.ly/fBufiq

Kara Lang Audio Interview - January 9th, 2010

Kara Lang, Canadian International, had to retire earlier in the week due to persistant knee problems due to injuries throughout her playing career for both the club and country. Still only 24 years old, Lang is a two-time FIFA World Cup player, an Olympian and a CONCACAF champion. She is also a W-League champion with Vancouver Whitecaps FC and a Canada Games gold medalist with Ontario.

Her 92 career appearances rank 8th all time on the women’s national team. In both 2003 and 2010, she helped Canada set national records with 13 wins on the year. The highlight of that 2003 season was a fourth-place finish at the FIFA Women’s World Cup USA 2003.

Kara Lang retires from soccer

OTTAWA -- Canadian women's international Kara Lang announced her retirement from competitive football Tuesday at 24-years-old due to the effects of injury.

Lang, who played for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC at the club level, participated in two FIFA Women's World Cups (2003, 2007), one Women's Olympic Football Tournament (2008), one Pan American Games (2007), and four CONCACAF championships (2002, 2004, 2008, 2010).

She also played in two FIFA U-20 Women's World Cups (2002 silver and 2004) and two CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championships (2004 gold and 2006).

"I have come to the very difficult decision to retire from soccer and step down from the national team," said Lang in a statement released by the Canadian Soccer Association. "I have always held myself to a very high standard - as it is demanded at the international level."

On March 1, 2002, Lang earned her first cap at age 15 in a 3-0 win over Scotland at the Algarve Cup in Portugal. Two days later, she became Canada's youngest scorer in a 4-0 win over Wales.

The Oakville, Ontario, native closed her international career two months ago with a 4-0 victory against Costa Rica, coming on as a second-half substitute during a CONCACAF Women's World Cup qualifier in Cancun, Mexico.

"For the past ten years, this team has been my second family and this program my second home," added Lang. "It has been an honor and a privilege to represent my country and I am extremely proud and grateful for the career I have had."

In all, Lang made 92 international appearances, good for eighth on the all-time Canadian chart . She also scored 34 goals during her career, the fourth most in team history.

The former US-collegiate standout was plagued by ACL injuries throughout the last four years.

Lang's first forced her miss the entire 2006 US college season, while the second in 2009 curtailed her final year.

Though she was able to recover and return to the field both times, Lang came to the conclusion that she could no longer perform at a high level.

"Regrettably, I am physically incapable of maintaining that standard and fulfilling my role as a player," said the former UCLA star.

Lang was a workhorse throughout her career, leading the national team in minutes played during her first two seasons. In 2003, she set national records (since passed) for matches (21) and minutes played (1,740) in a single year. Her 21 goals over those two years (2002-2003) were only surpassed by Christine Sinclair's 22 over the same two-year period.

"I feel that as a player, I have received everything I can from the game and have given it everything I have," concluded Lang. "I also believe that I still have a lot to offer the national program and soccer in this country.

"I plan to continue to be involved and support my team and this program as much as possible in other capacities."

Kara Lang has announced her retirement as an active soccer player from international and club duty. Still only 24 years old, Lang is a two-time FIFA World Cup player, an Olympian and a CONCACAF champion. She is also a W-League champion with Vancouver Whitecaps FC and a Canada Games gold medalist with Ontario.

“I have come to the very difficult decision to retire from soccer and step down from the national team,” said Kara Lang. “I have always held myself to a very high standard - as it is demanded at the international level. Regrettably, I am physically incapable of maintaining that standard and fulfilling my role as a player.”

Kara spent nine years with the national team, having made her debut at age 15 on 1 March 2002 at the Algarve Cup in Portugal. Her last international appearance was 5 November 2010 at the CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifier in CancĂșn, Mexico.

“For the past ten years, this team has been my second family and this program my second home,” said Lang. “It has been an honour and a priviledge to represent my country and I am extremely proud and grateful for the career I have had.”

At age 15, she was the youngest member on Canada’s national team. Two days later, she became Canada’s youngest scorer in a 4:0 win over Wales. Despite only making her entrance as a substitute, she scored two goals in the second half.

“I am also grateful for having the opportunity to play under Carolina Morace for the past year and a half, as I consider her a mentor both on and off the field,” said Lang. “I am very excited about the future of this program under the guidance of Carolina and I know that she will bring this team and soccer in Canada to the highest level.”

In all, Lang made 92 appearances for her country. In 2005, she was the youngest player to reach the 50-match milestone. She also scored 34 goals during her career, the fourth most in team history.

Lang participated in two FIFA Women’s World Cups (2003, 2007), one Women’s Olympic Football Tournament (2008), one Pan American Games (2007), and four CONCACAF championships (2002, 2004, 2008, 2010). She also participated in two FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cups (2002 silver and 2004) and two CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championships (2004 gold and 2006).

At club level, Lang spent most of her career with Vancouver Whitecaps FC. This included her return to the club in 2010 where she also served as a club ambassador for women’s soccer in the community. Lang helped Whitecaps FC to United Soccer Leagues W-League championship titles in 2004 and 2006. In five seasons with the club, Lang appeared in 36 matches, scoring 14 goals and adding eight assists.

Lang also played for the W-League’s Pali Blues in 2009, which on the west coast was close to her school UCLA (2005-2009). Lang was a standout for the UCLA Bruins, helping the team reach the NCAA championship final in 2005, only falling on the final day to the University of Portland. On the year, she scored 17 goals and six assists, both club records for freshmen players.

While her first knee injury made her miss the entire 2006 college season, the second injury curtailed her final college season in 2009. That second injury (again an ACL tear) was suffered on 27 September 2009.

She recovered from both injuries, the first time joining the national team on the road to the FIFA Women’s World Cup China 2007. After her second injury in 2009, she returned to the national team in 2010 and helped Canada win its second CONCACAF Women’s Championship.
She scored her final goal in her final start on 31 October 2010 against Guyana.

Amongst her goal-scoring highlights, she is one of just six Canadians to score four goals in a match and one of just two players to score 10 or more goals in back-to-back seasons. She was not only the youngest Canadian to score a goal in an international match, but also the youngest Canadian to score in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, a CONCACAF Women’s Championship, and the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.

Lang was also a workhorse, leading the national team in minutes played in her first two seasons. In 2003, she set national records (since passed) for matches (21) and minutes played (1,740) in a single year. Her 21 goals over those two years (2002-2003) were only surpassed by Christine Sinclair’s 22 from the same two-year period.

Her 92 career appearances rank 8th all time on the women’s national team. In both 2003 and 2010, she helped Canada set national records with 13 wins on the year. The highlight of that 2003 season was a fourth-place finish at the FIFA Women’s World Cup USA 2003.

“I feel that as a player, I have received everything I can from the game and have given it everything I have,” said Lang. “I also believe that I still have a lot to offer the national program and soccer in this country. I plan to continue to be involved and support my team and this program as much as possible in other capacities.”

Lang was born in Calgary, AB, but grew up and played soccer in Oakville, ON. She was five years old when she started playing for Oakville Soccer Club.

- Sad to see Lang needs to retire at such a young age. Especially due to injuries, that's always tough. She'll be missed and also disappointing she won't be a part of the 2011 World Cup in Germany.
